Asthma

I was just reading in one of my HUGE (1100) diagnosis books and found this about asthma and thought I'd pass it on.

* The consumption of apples and fish may have a protective effect on the development of childhood asthma or allergies

* The consumption of apple juice from concentrate (not apples) and bananas may protect against wheezing in children.

* Another study found that apples and pears may be protective against asthma

* Contrary to prior belief, whole milk may protect against current asthma and conversely, soy beverages may increase risk of current asthma.

* Women who have a high intake of tomatoes, carrots, and leafy vegetables have a lower prevalence of asthma.

* There were similar findings in a study on the Mediterranean diet which appears to be protective for allergic rhinitis and asthma symptoms. The diet studied contained mainly fruits, vegetables and nuts.

(rhinitis is a fancy term for stuffy nose, irritation to nose, runny nose).

So, bottom line is....if you or your child suffer from asthma, increase their fruits and veggies (especially apples!) An apple a day keeps the doctor away.

Whole milk - raw or pasteurized?

Whole milk is a huge irritant in my husband's asthma unless it is raw. And we are not getting raw milk right now, so he has to completely avoid it.

Interesting - if apples are helping his asthma, I hate to think what it would be without the apples. Though, really, Tommy isn't bad except when he gets any kind of respiratory illness.

Very interesting. I may print this out and take it to mine/Alex's asthma/allergy specialist next time one of us has to go in. I've been going to him for 18 years now; I would love to hear his opinion on all this - he is always very well informed and great at getting info out to his patients. I bet a lot depends on what type of asthma you have as well - I'd be willing to be some of this may not apply much to me, as mine is exercised-induced asthma. Alex's, however, is triggered by colds. So I'm curious how much of this would be beneficial to him... hmmmmmmmm

Thanks for sharing!
