Tips for Keeping Kids Occupied on Long Car Trips

Lil Red asked " What do you do to entertain kids when you are driving on a long trip?"

ANSWERS & TIPS:
~Kimberlie~ DVD Player! We drove close to 3,000 miles and if it wasn't for the DVD player I think we would have went insane.

Nancy: We Bring the Travel Magnadoodle and his Learn Through Music, lots of stuff to color, and some Colorforms. I also saw this game where you print out bingo cards with different things you'd see on a road trip, and they cross them off as they see them. Alex is good at pointing things out so we can do a modified version of this.

Hope: We pack a bag full of crayons, colored pencils, paper, coloring books, reading books, snacks, her cd player and cds, and some small toys, and that will keep her occupied the majority of the way there, unless we'll be travelling for more than 8 hours or so. Then she tends to get a little restless.

More ideas:
Crayola Window Markers have done wonders in our travels. Give the kids each a pack as well as a pack of Windex Wipes and let them go to town.

With older kids, do bubble blowing contests with bubble gum.

Buy a package of new, colored pipe cleaners and encourage your kids to make various things with them. Let them use their imaginations or give them ideas such as flowers, animals, rainbows, etc.

Felt boards with animals, shapes, people, etc.

Keep little ones occupied for awhile with bubbles.

We have found in our traveling that when young kids start to get restless and irritable, jazz music is a soother. With 4 kids, we've found this to hole true with all of them! Turn on some jazz music on the radio and within minutes, they were calmed down, if not asleep.
