Hemorrhoids
Swollen blood vessels around the anus are hemorrhoids that may bleed and cause pain. They are quite common during pregnancy, because of the increased blood volume and increasing pressure from the uterus on the veins that return blood from the legs and pelvis.
Heartburn
A burning sensation that occurs in your chest about the level of your heart is heartburn and is what gives this condition it’s name. It’s caused by the contents of your stomach backing up into the esophagus, then the stomach acids irritate the lining of the esophagus. It has nothing to do with the heart at all.
High
A pregnant woman, who is in her 5th pregnancy or more is considered high.
Home Birth
A home birth where the baby arrives at home, or away from a hospital or birthing center. This option is only appropriate for women with low-risk pregnancies and the birth needs to be attended by a physician or a midwife. It is in the best interest of the baby, as well as the mother, that a hospital is nearby in case of an emergency.
Human Chorionic Gonadotropin
"hCG" or Human Chorionic Gonadotropin, is a hormone produced in early pregnancy by the placenta. It is used to detect pregnancy by a home pregnancy test or a blood test.
Hyaline Membrane Disease
Hyaline Membrane Disease is a respiratory disease that occurs in newborns (usually premature).
Hydramnios
Hydramnios is an excess of amniotic fluid.
Hypertension
High blood pressure that occurs in pregnancy iis hypertension.

Immunizations are natural immunity or induced immunity given by injections.
Incontinence
Incontinence is the involuntary release of urine. It is very common among older adults and also new mothers, especially when coughing, straining or laughing. Kegal exercises help strengthen the muscles that control urination and may cut down on urine leakage.
Induction
An induction is artificially starting labor by use of medication and/or breaking the ‘bag of waters’.
Jaundice
Jaundice yellow tinge to a baby’s skin and eyes caused by too much biliruben in the baby’s bloodstream.
Kegal Exercises
Exercises that strengthen the muscles that control urination , sometimes done to prevent urine leakage.
Labor
Contractions of the uterine muscles, which opens the cervix and allows a baby to be born.
Lacerations
Torn and ragged wounds. During delivery of a baby, sometimes an episiotomy can prevent tearing of the mother’s perineum.

The fine, downy hair that covers the unborn baby by about 26 weeks gestation.
Lightening
Also called ‘engagement’, is the repositioning of the baby lower in the pelvis, sometimes referred to as ‘dropping’. This can occur up to several weeks before the onset of labor.
Linea Nigra
The barely noticeable white or dark-colored line that runs from the navel to the pubic hair, which often darken during pregnancy.
LMP (Last menstrual period)
The first day of your last period.
Lochia
The discharge of blood, mucus and tissue from the uterus, following childbirth, which usually lasts about 6 weeks postpartum.
