Week 24

Welcome to week 24! Your baby is now 22 weeks and weight a little over a pound and measures 8.4 inches. Remember that the length of baby does not include the legs; it is simply from the top of the head to the end of the bottom. The legs are tucked up against the body as baby remains in "fetal position". Your baby is still very thin but is developing fat and is 'filling out'.

Are you noticing changes to your eyes? They may feel itchy and like there is sand in them and may be sensitive to lights. This is common in pregnancy for many women. Using eye drops is perfectly acceptable to give your eyes some relief.

Are you familiar with the term 'incompetent cervix'? You may question what it is and how you know if you have it. An incompetent cervix can occur anytime after 16 weeks. It is a dilation or stretching of the cervix that can cause premature delivery of the baby if not taken care of. It is generally painfree and doesn't involve noticable contractions and many times doesn't get diagnosed until after the membranes rupture. In later weeks of pregnancy an incompetent cervix can be diagnosed when an internal check is done. While the cause of this problem is not fully known, it is believed that D&C, previous surgeries on the cervix or abortion can be a cause. If untreated, a premature delivery can occur, but if caught in time, a suture is put into place (called a cerclage) to help hold the cervix closed until the baby is big enough and old enough for a safe delivery.
